Common questions — and honest answers
These are the questions we are asked on the phone and in advice sessions. The uncomfortable ones too. The answers are as short as possible and as honest as necessary: where the answer is no, it says no.
The questions are sorted into five groups — access and requirements, funding and money, lessons and technology, qualification and afterwards, practical matters. If your question is not among them, give us a call: 0211 81994488, Monday to Friday.
The most important things first
Five statements that come up in many of the answers
These five points explain most of the answers on this page. If you only have a minute, read these.
- The Bildungsgutschein is a discretionary benefit — The Agentur für Arbeit decides in your individual case. There is no legal right to it, and we cannot promise you that it will be approved. What we can do: we write the documents and the written reasons for you to take to your appointment.
- The qualification is a certificate issued by the provider — We issue it ourselves. It is not a qualification in a recognised training occupation, such as those from the Industrie- und Handelskammer or the Handwerkskammer. SEC0, SEC1 and SAL1 are something different: extra certifications from TryHackMe that you receive once you pass the exam.
- The lessons are full-time and completely live — Nine months, Monday to Friday, 1,400 teaching units of 45 minutes each. The approval document states: asynchronous share 0. There is no self-study time that counts as lessons, and there are no recordings.
- We cannot promise you a job — We teach you the subject and prepare you for applying for jobs. Whether and how quickly you find a job afterwards depends on the labour market and on you. We do not promise you a particular salary either.
- The start on 2 November 2026 is planned — For a group to start, we need a minimum number of registrations. If not enough people register, we postpone the start by two to four weeks and tell you straight away.
Am I even eligible?
Access and requirements
The further training is designed for people with no previous IT knowledge. You do not need a particular school-leaving certificate. These questions come up almost every day.
I do not have a German passport. Can I take part?
Yes. What counts for the funding is not your nationality but your access to the German labour market. Anyone who is allowed to work here can be funded. Take your Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) with you to the appointment at the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit.
My Aufenthaltstitel is time-limited. Is that a problem?
No, that does not rule you out. Since January 2026 there has been a separate paragraph about this in the rules of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit. What matters is not the date on your permit. What matters is your access to the labour market: you must be allowed to work here, and it must be likely that this will still be the case after the further training. The Bildungsgutschein itself is only valid for a short time anyway, three months at most. This time limit does not depend on your Aufenthaltstitel. If your further training runs longer than your permit, the Agentur für Arbeit writes one sentence into the Bildungsgutschein and into the decision letter (Bescheid). It means: the funding ends early if you lose your access to the labour market. Only then. To be honest about it: if your permit is not extended and you are therefore no longer allowed to work, it is not only the money that stops — the further training is stopped as well. Your contact person at the Agentur für Arbeit is instructed to check, no later than four weeks before it expires, whether your extension is under way. Even so, do not rely on that alone. Tell us how long your permit is valid — then it is written correctly from the start in the Begründung (the written reasons) that you take with you to the appointment. The same applies to employed people, § 82 Ziffer 1 Absatz 7. Whether funding is granted is decided by the Agentur für Arbeit at its own discretion — the same as for everyone else.)
Is my German good enough?
Lessons are in German. You should understand and speak German well enough to follow the lessons and to ask questions. We do not require a particular level. We do not require a language certificate either — not telc, not Goethe, not any other. You do not have to apply for anything, pay anything or wait for an exam date. Instead we have a short talk with you and tell you honestly whether it is enough. What counts for your enrolment with us is this conversation, not a piece of paper. Your teacher explains English technical terms in the lessons. These words are new for everyone, native speakers included.
And what if my German is not good enough yet?
Then it is not a no for ever, only a no for now. The Integrationskurs ends at level B1; it does not go higher there. For our lessons you need more. There is exactly one course in between: the Berufssprachkurs (job-related German course) with target level B2. You start with B1, and the course usually covers 400 teaching units. If your B1 is not yet solid, there is also a version with 500 units. For this you need a Teilnahmeberechtigung — a document that opens the door to a place on the course. We are not the ones who decide that; the office responsible for you does: your Agentur für Arbeit, your Jobcenter or the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge. If you are registered as unemployed or as a jobseeker, the course is free for you. If you are employed, you usually pay part of it yourself. So at your next appointment ask: ‘Kann ich einen Berufssprachkurs mit Ziel B2 machen?’ (Can I do a Berufssprachkurs with target level B2?) And then get in touch with us again. We will tell you when the next group starts. (§ 45a Aufenthaltsgesetz and Deutschsprachförderverordnung, § 4 and § 5 on the Teilnahmeberechtigung and the cost contribution, § 12 and § 14 Absatz 2 on aim and scope.)
I have never worked in IT.
With us, that is completely normal. Phase 1 starts from zero: how a computer is put together, Windows, Linux, the first commands you type. Programming comes late and in small steps. No question is too simple.
I am bad at maths. Can I still do it?
Yes. The work in a security team is not about doing calculations. It consists of reading, comparing and deciding: What does the log file say? Does this fit together? Is this dangerous?
I am 48. Am I too old?
No. There is no age limit for the funding. What counts is whether the further training brings you back into work (§ 81 SGB III). If you are still employed and aged 45 or older, your employer's own share can be waived completely — but only if your company has fewer than 500 employees. If it belongs to a group of companies, all employees of the group count as well (§ 82 Absatz 2 Satz 4 and Absatz 6 SGB III).
I am under 25. Is there an age limit for me?
No, there is no age limit. In your case too, the Bildungsgutschein is issued by the Agentur für Arbeit. In practice, though, the Agentur für Arbeit often suggests an Ausbildung (apprenticeship) to young people first. That is exactly what your Begründung, the written reasons we write for you, argues against.
My qualification from abroad is not recognised here.
For this job you do not need recognition of your qualifications. Some professions are regulated. That means: the law ties access to a particular qualification, for example for doctors, lawyers or nursing professionals (§ 3 Absatz 5 BQFG). According to the Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung, IT jobs are not among them. So you are allowed to work in this job even without German recognition. For enrolment with us you also do not need a particular school-leaving certificate or a recognised vocational qualification. To be honest about it: whether an employer later asks about qualifications is that employer's own decision. Recognition is not compulsory, but it can be useful. And for an Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) for the purpose of employment, an official finding of equivalence can be required (§ 18 Absatz 2 Nummer 4 AufenthG); whether this applies to you is something your Ausländerbehörde will tell you, not us. You can get free advice through the federal recognition portal, anerkennung-in-deutschland.de. Even so, take all the certificates you have with you to the appointment at the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit — even the ones that are not recognised in Germany. It helps your contact person to understand your career path, and it helps us when we write your Begründung, the written reasons.
I have a health condition.
Tell us before you register. The lessons run for eight teaching units a day in front of a screen. Some things we can arrange, others we cannot. We will tell you honestly what is possible. Your contact person at the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit can also check whether there is extra support for you.
Do I have to live in Düsseldorf?
No. The lessons take place in a virtual classroom. You learn from home, wherever in Germany you live. There is no school building you have to travel to. Düsseldorf is only where we are based.
Is there an entrance exam?
Not an exam, no. There is a conversation before you register. In it we clarify four things: your German, your time, your place to learn and your funding options. On the home page you can check for yourself beforehand whether funding is possible for you: three questions, about two minutes, no registration and no obligation.
I am still in the Integrationskurs. Should I get in touch already?
Yes. Two courses at the same time usually do not work, because both take place during the day. But the timing of the Bildungsgutschein matters: it is valid for three months at most, and your first day of lessons with us has to fall within that time. So apply for it to match the course start, not months in advance. Tell us when your course ends — we will tell you which month is the right one for you.
I have a Niederlassungserlaubnis.
Then this point is quickly settled. The Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent settlement permit) has no time limit (§ 9 Absatz 1 Satz 1 AufenthG) and allows you to work (§ 4a Absatz 1 AufenthG). There is no expiry date that anything could be tied to. There is still a date on your card — that is how long the card is valid, not how long your right of residence lasts (§ 78 Absatz 2 Satz 2 Nummer 6 AufenthG). When the card expires, the Ausländerbehörde issues a new one. The same applies to the Erlaubnis zum Daueraufenthalt – EU (§ 9a AufenthG).

Funding and money
The Bildungsgutschein pays for the lessons. It does not pay your rent. These two things have to be sorted out separately, and before the course starts.
Who pays for this further training?
As a rule the Agentur für Arbeit, through a Bildungsgutschein. It settles the costs of the lessons directly with us. You do not get an invoice. The Bildungsgutschein is a discretionary benefit: the Agentur für Arbeit decides in your individual case.
What does the further training cost me?
With an approved Bildungsgutschein you pay nothing for the lessons. You get a laptop and a headset from us on loan for the duration of the further training. Without approval, the further training costs money; we will tell you the amount when we speak.
Who issues the Bildungsgutschein — the Jobcenter or the Agentur für Arbeit?
The Agentur für Arbeit. Since 1 January 2025 this has been true in every case, even if the Jobcenter is the office looking after you and you receive Grundsicherung. The Jobcenter advises you and passes you on to the Agentur für Arbeit. Ask politely at the office which department is responsible.
Am I entitled to the Bildungsgutschein?
No. There is a firm entitlement only for further training that leads to a qualification in a recognised training occupation (§ 81 Absatz 2 SGB III). Our further training is not one of those. In our case the Agentur für Arbeit always decides at its own discretion. What you can influence is the quality of the reasons you give.
I am unemployed. Which rule applies to me?
§ 81 SGB III. The Agentur für Arbeit can provide funding if the further training is necessary to get you back into work. For unemployed people it is enough if the training improves your chances on the labour market and matches occupations that are in demand (§ 81 Absatz 1a SGB III). If you receive Grundsicherung, the same further training rules of the SGB III apply (§ 16 SGB II).
My job ends soon. Can I get a Bildungsgutschein now?
Yes, that is possible. If you have been given notice or your contract is coming to an end, you can be regarded as at risk of unemployment (§ 17 SGB III). The full Bildungsgutschein is then possible, and your employer does not have to take part. Also register as a jobseeker: at the latest three months before your last working day, and within three days if you only find out later (§ 38 SGB III).
I have a permanent job. Is it still possible?
Then the normal Bildungsgutschein does not apply to you, but § 82 SGB III does. This funding goes through your employer. Your employer has to release you from work and pays part of the costs, depending on the size of the company. Often there is no Bildungsgutschein at all in this case; instead an Anmeldebescheinigung from us is enough (§ 81 Absatz 4 Satz 4 SGB III). That is a document from us confirming your registration. To be honest with you: nine months of full-time lessons alongside a job simply do not work. Your employer would have to release you from work for that whole time.
I was at home for a long time because of children or care duties.
If you took a break to raise children or to care for a relative and now want to return to work, you are a Berufsrückkehrerin or Berufsrückkehrer — someone returning to working life (§ 20 SGB III). Funding then also follows § 81 SGB III. You do not have to be receiving any money from the office for this. Contact your Agentur für Arbeit and ask for an advice appointment about further vocational training.
The office says I should look for work first.
Since 1 July 2026 the priority of job placement, the Vermittlungsvorrang, has applied in the Grundsicherung (§ 3a SGB II): first it is checked whether you can be placed into a job quickly, and further training comes only after that. There is one exception. The priority does not apply if another form of integration support is ‘erfolgversprechender’ — more likely to succeed — for lasting integration into work (§ 3a Absatz 2 SGB II). That is exactly the word used in the law. So you have to show why a job you could take today would not get you out of unemployment for good. We write these reasons down for you. If you receive Arbeitslosengeld, § 3a SGB II does not apply to you; there the standard is § 81 Absatz 1 SGB III. You need the reasons in both cases.
What do I live on during these nine months?
The Bildungsgutschein pays for the lessons, not for your living costs. If you receive Arbeitslosengeld, it carries on. If you receive Grundsicherung — it used to be called Bürgergeld — it carries on as well and is still paid by the Jobcenter. If you currently get nothing at all from the office, you can still be funded, but then nobody pays your living costs, and you are not covered by health insurance through the Agentur für Arbeit either. Clear this up before the start, not afterwards.
Does my Arbeitslosengeld get used up during the further training?
Only half as fast. For every two days of further training, one day is taken off your entitlement (§ 148 SGB III). So after the nine months you still have some of it left. Your Agentur für Arbeit works out exactly how many days that is. Ask about it at your appointment.
Do I get a monthly Weiterbildungsgeld (training allowance) or a bonus?
No. Weiterbildungsgeld and bonuses only exist for further training that leads to a qualification in a recognised training occupation (§ 87a SGB III). Our further training is not one of those. And do not let anyone promise it to you.
I have children. Who looks after them while I am studying?
Caring responsibilities do not rule you out. Costs for looking after your children can be covered in addition under § 87 SGB III. This also applies when the lessons take place at your home. Your Agentur für Arbeit will tell you how much is covered. Ask about it before you say no.
What if the office says no?
That happens. Ask for a written decision, a Bescheid; there is nothing you can do about a spoken refusal. Against a written decision you can lodge an objection, a Widerspruch. That means: you tell the office in writing that you do not agree with the decision. As a rule you have one month for this, counted from the day the decision reaches you. The exact deadline is stated in the decision. Also ask for the reason. Often just one piece of proof is missing, or the reasons were too general. Then we work on them again with you. To reassure you: if you do not get a Bildungsgutschein or do not use it, you do not face a Sperrzeit for that — so no weeks without money from the office.
Should I quit my job so that I can take part?
No. Never hand in your own notice in order to start with us. Handing in your notice yourself can trigger a Sperrzeit of twelve weeks, so twelve weeks without Arbeitslosengeld. On top of that, a quarter of your entitlement is gone for good (§ 159 SGB III). You cannot rely on further training being recognised as a good reason, a wichtiger Grund. As a rule that only applies to further training that leads to a qualification in a recognised training occupation. Talk to us and to your Agentur für Arbeit first.
I have already had a funded further training course.
That does not rule you out. But your Agentur für Arbeit will ask why the last one did not achieve its aim. Bring it up yourself at the appointment and explain the difference. For employed people there is one more rule: you must not already have had funding under § 82 SGB III in the last two years.
I already have a Bildungsgutschein for another provider.
The Bildungsgutschein names a training objective, not the name of a provider. You choose the provider yourself; the provider has to be approved for this objective. The training objective and the area of validity have to match our further training. Show us the Bildungsgutschein and we will look at it together with you. Wanting to change does not put you at risk of a Sperrzeit.
Do I have to pay the Bildungsgutschein back?
No. The Bildungsgutschein is not a loan and not a debt. The Agentur für Arbeit pays the costs of the lessons directly to us.
What everyday life looks like
Lessons and technology
Nine months, Monday to Friday, always live with an instructor. Here is what that means day to day.
What does a day of lessons look like?
From 9:00 to 16:40, eight teaching units of 45 minutes each. First you start the day together as a group, then the instructor explains a new topic, then you practise yourself while the instructor helps. After the lunch break you work on the practice platform, and at the end you go through the results together. You get the exact timetable with all the breaks before the start.
Do I have to travel anywhere?
No. The lessons take place in the virtual classroom via Microsoft Teams. You are at home at your own table.
What equipment do I need?
You do not have to buy anything. You get a laptop with a camera and a headset from us on loan, and all the accounts for the learning platforms as well. What you bring yourself is a stable internet connection with at least 10 Mbit per second, a quiet place for speaking and listening, and the time.
Are there recordings for catching up?
No. There are no recordings of the lessons. Our programme approval states: asynchronous components 0. If you are absent, you miss the material. Your teacher helps you catch up, and your group helps too. That is why missed days should stay the exception. The only thing recorded is your attendance for each teaching day, because the funding requires it.
Is everything in English?
The lessons are in German, and so are the explanatory videos. The practice platform is partly in English, because the whole industry uses English technical terms. Your teacher explains them. These words are new to everyone, including native German speakers.
What if I am ill for a day?
You report sick and send in your sick note, just like in a company. Your attendance is recorded for each teaching day; that is part of the funding. After that your teacher helps you catch up.
And what if I am absent for several weeks?
Then it gets hard, and we say that openly. Every phase builds on the one before. Tell us and your Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit straight away, not at the end. Sometimes starting with a later group is the more honest way. Your Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit decides about your benefits, not us.
Can I work on the side?
Not during teaching hours. The lessons run on five working days between 9:00 and 16:40. If you receive benefits, talk to your contact person at the Jobcenter or Agentur für Arbeit about any side job before you take it on.
Do I have to study in the evenings and at weekends?
It is not compulsory. All 1,400 teaching units take place in live lessons; there is no self-study time that you have to work through at home. If you would like to practise on top of that, you can.
What if I cannot keep up in the lessons?
Tell us early, not after three weeks. Your teacher is there all day, and you can ask at any time. For at least 60% of the time you work at the computer yourself, and during that time your teacher helps wherever you get stuck. The programme is built for people with no previous IT knowledge. There is no question that is too simple.
Do I have to speak in front of the group?
You work together as a group, and you see each other every day. At the start this feels unfamiliar for many people, especially if German is not your first language. Explaining is also part of the job: in a security team you need to be able to say what you saw and why you decided the way you did.
How big is the group?
You are one fixed group and go through all the phases together for nine months. The number of places is limited. There is no way to join a group that has already started.
What is this SOC‑Simulator?
A practice environment where alerts come in just like in a real security team. You check every alert and decide: real attack or false alarm? Then you write a short report. This happens in the lessons with your teacher, from week 24 onwards. A detailed explanation is on the SOC‑Simulator page.
What you get at the end
Qualification and afterwards
You need to keep two things apart: the qualification you get from us and the certifications from TryHackMe. And we answer the question about a job here as honestly as it is asked.
What will I have at the end?
The provider-issued certificate from the CYBERSQUAD Akademie for the completed programme. On top of that, up to three certifications from TryHackMe, if you have passed the exams. And your own portfolio with the small programs from phase 5, your case reports from the simulator, and a finished set of application documents.
Is this a vocational qualification?
No. You get a provider-issued certificate. Provider-issued means: we issue it ourselves. It is not a qualification in a recognised training occupation like the ones from the Industrie- und Handelskammer (chamber of industry and commerce) or the Handwerkskammer (chamber of skilled crafts). If you are looking for that kind of qualification, tell us — then a different programme is the right one for you.
What are SEC0, SEC1 and SAL1?
Three certifications from the practice platform TryHackMe. They come on top and are separate from the qualification for completing the programme. TryHackMe runs the exams, not us. You can fail. We prepare you for them in the lessons; we cannot promise that you will pass. Exams you have passed can be verified through the platform Credly: you get a link, and anyone who clicks it can see that you really passed the exam.
What happens if I do not pass one of these exams?
Then you are missing that one extra certificate. Your qualification with us is not affected by it: the provider-issued certificate does not depend on the TryHackMe exams. The lessons carry on for you as normal.
Is the certificate valid abroad too?
The provider-issued certificate is a German document that we issue ourselves. The certifications from TryHackMe are recorded with Credly: anyone who clicks the link can verify from anywhere that you passed the exam. On top of that you have your work samples, which anyone can look at.
What do people earn in this job?
In Germany, junior positions in IT security are mostly advertised with an annual salary between 41,000 and 70,000 euros. What it comes to in the end depends on the region, the size of the company and your previous experience; any promise would be dishonest, and we do not make one. For a neutral source: the Bundesagentur für Arbeit publishes figures for individual occupations in its Entgeltatlas. In the lessons in phase 6 we cover how people in Germany talk about salary.
What does a Junior SOC Analyst actually do?
This is the person who is the first to notice an attack on a company's computers. They sit in the security team, see the alerts from the systems and decide which of them is serious. False alarm, small incident or serious incident — and then they write down what they saw and what they decided.
Do you help me with my job applications?
Yes, in phase 6. For three weeks you build up your CV for the German job market, set up a LinkedIn profile and put your portfolio together. Then you practise two job interviews: one with a person from the HR department, one with a specialist from IT security. Placing you in a company is not part of the programme.
Do you find jobs for people too?
No. We are a training provider, not a job placement agency. We cannot promise you a job. What we do: teach you the trade and, in phase 6, practise job applications with you for three weeks.
Will I get a job afterwards?
We cannot promise you that. What we do: we teach you the technical side, and the last three weeks are for your job applications. Two sources show how companies in Germany fill their IT positions, and they paint different pictures; we give you both. According to the Bitkom study 2025 (a survey of 855 companies with three or more employees, May to July 2025), an open IT position stays unfilled for 7.7 months on average — exactly as long as in 2023. In the same study, 27% of new IT hires are career changers, and 85% of the companies surveyed say there are too few IT specialists. The figures from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit show the other side: in 2025 an average of around 13,000 vacancies for IT and communication occupations were registered over the year, 22% fewer than the year before. All these figures apply to IT occupations as a whole, not to IT security alone.
Dates, registration, dropping out
Practical matters
The process has a fixed order, and a few deadlines come from the authorities, not from us.
When does it start, and how long does it last?
The planned start is Monday, 2 November 2026. The programme lasts nine months, that is 39 weeks; four weeks of holiday are included. To start, we need a minimum number of registrations. If too few sign up, we move the start by two to four weeks and tell you straight away.
Can I join later, once the course has already started?
No. The group starts together on the same day, because every phase builds on the one before. Joining a group that has already started is not possible.
My Bildungsgutschein will not arrive until after the start.
Then you wait for the next group; we will tell you the next date. One more thing that matters: your Bildungsgutschein comes in several official copies — one of them is for us. We confirm your enrolment on it and submit it to your Agentur für Arbeit; this has to happen before the course starts and while your Bildungsgutschein is still valid. Send it to CYBERSQUAD Akademie UG, Speditionstraße 15a, 40221 Düsseldorf. Until then a photo in your personal area is enough — that secures your place straight away. Tell us early which date is on it — it is usually valid for three months.
How do I register?
The steps come in a fixed order. First the appointment with your Vermittlungsfachkraft — that is the person who looks after you at the Agentur für Arbeit or at the Jobcenter. Then the decision by the Agentur für Arbeit, then the registration with us. Before that, we write the documents and the reasons for the appointment for you. As soon as your Bildungsgutschein arrives, you upload it in your personal area — a photo from your phone is enough. That secures your place straight away. After that you send us the copy for the provider by post: we confirm your enrolment on it and submit it to your Agentur für Arbeit. Only then do we call you and complete your binding registration. You submit the application yourself: the Bundesagentur für Arbeit does not accept an application that a training provider submits for you with power of attorney.
When are my holidays?
Four weeks of holiday are firmly scheduled, in two blocks of two weeks each, always directly after an exam. There are no lessons on public holidays either. Plan trips and private appointments for the holiday weeks, because your attendance is recorded on all other teaching days. You will get the exact dates with the timetable before the start.
What happens if I drop out?
Tell us and your office as early as possible, so that we can look for a solution first. And the uncomfortable part belongs here too: dropping out without good reason can have consequences for your benefits — with Arbeitslosengeld a blocking period, called Sperrzeit (§ 159 SGB III), and with Grundsicherung a reduction. Your office decides that, not us. This is why we talk so carefully about your time and your caring responsibilities before you register.
Is the further training also available part-time or in the evening?
No. It is approved as a full-time programme, Monday to Friday. There is no evening or weekend version.
I am moving to a new address. Can I carry on?
The lessons do not depend on where you are; you learn from home. Moving within Germany does not change that. Let your office know: which Agentur für Arbeit or which Jobcenter is then responsible for you depends on where you live.
What happens to my data?
We only collect what is needed for the advice, the registration and the funding. We record attendance because the funding requires it. There are no recordings of the lessons. You will find the details in our privacy policy.

Where can I check that you really are approved?
Title of the programme: AI-Driven Security Operations Specialist. That is exactly how it appears on the approval, with no additions. Provider: approved under § 178 SGB III in conjunction with the AZAV, certificate reg. no. A2601001, subject area 4, valid until 10 June 2031. Programme: certificate reg. no.
